New Site Updates

Hey there everyone -- I update the site frequently with people's feedback. I'll use this as an ongoing list so people can see the subtle features that are added, so you don't miss them.

Sorted newest to oldest:

  • 8/21/2013
  • The 'compact' and 'standard' tabs have now switched background colors. Believe it or not I've got more than one overbearing email about how 'extremely idiotic' it was having it the other way... take a chill pill guys.
  • Buckets now show a mini-description so you can tell what it is. I tried to make it unobtrusive so you can still skim
  • Clicking large buckets show a loading animation now on your profile. If the several milliseconds that the loading animation shows is bothering you on buckets that don't take long to load, let me know and I will make it fade slowly in instead.
  • There's now a link on the sidebar --> over there, about request posts.
  • Very minor css edits
  • 8/18/2013
  • Some new front-end updates for you guys. It has been awhile on those, but most recent updates have been on the backend.
  • Youtube links now work properly (finally!). You can just submit youtube URL's normally and they will be handled.
  • Resource titles now allow 3 characters instead of 4
  • Better looking flash messages that don't look like it's from PotatoWeb2000
  • Notification to new/anonymous users about adding resources and best practices
  • 12/9/2012
  • CSS tweaks
  • Improved tooltips on top right blurb
  • Tooltip library is a bit heavy, let me know if it's noticeably slower. It has a lot of functionality I'm going to use though, particularly for the 'add to favorites in category' feature.
  • 12/5/2012
  • Few major performance fixes with script and loading assets. Let me know your results, in my testing it's much faster.
  • Redid how discussion topics are handled with read vs unread. It will now properly go to the right spot only if there is an unread post.
  • Apparently RSS was broken and I didn't realize. it is now fixed for both all resources or individual tag-based RSS
  • wiki now doesn't open links in new tab
  • 11/23/2012
  • Added a wiki
  • Fixed a lot of terribad styling that was bothering me for a really long time
  • Misc fixes
  • 10/17/2012
  • Painfully converted all images to sprites... Site loads much, much more smoothly now
  • Changed the syntax theme for all inline code blocks in comments (light bg instead of dark)
  • Lots of minor css fixes
  • Bookmarklet updated to include a link to pineapple as well as a link back to the resource
  • Max comment thread level increased from 6 to 7 levels deep (inception)
  • Several tweaks to search algorithm for text-based search
  • Updated about/faq to reflect the new search feature
  • Deferred loading of social scripts where they aren't used for even more speed/performance improvements
  • 10/4/2012
  • Added a full text based search that will continually be optimized based on past queries
  • CSS fixes to layout
  • 9/19/2012
  • Added a bookmarklet: http://pineapple.io/discussion/bookmarklet-released
  • Updated the FAQ, specifically Question #2.
  • Added Recent Posts in the discussion sidebar to browse posts while you're browsing posts ("yo dawg...").
  • 9/14/2012
  • On the submit page, it now links you internally rather than externally if the URL already exists, so that you can favorite a resource or view it on Pineapple (instead of trying to search for it by tag to find it).
  • Discussion now has bolded titles for unread content. It will also bold it in the sidebar.
  • Leader board on sidebar profile page
  • back to discussion link on each post to make it easier.
  • Auto linking on discussion/replies so you dont have to use markdown for just links.
  • 9/12/14
  • On the submit page, you are now notified of similar URL's on Pineapple, so you don't need to fill out the whole form only to find out it's already been added
  • A fully restructured comment system that now notifies you directly of replies (instead of having to constantly view all recent comments to see if there are new replies).
  • I have removed the collapse feature from favorites as it was causing more problems then it was worth. I will be redoing this entire section in my next round of updates to give you several options to organize your favorites (by date/tag/type)
  • Discussion area - Now allows everyone to have more relaxed discussion with like-minded people wanting to learn.
  • Request area - you can submit requests for resources. Click 'new request' to learn more

You can also do large codeblocks now, in addition to small ones

system_monitor.check_for_overheating

class SystemMonitor
  def check_for_overheating
    if temperature > 100
      sound_alarms
    end
  end
end

Well, Wiki will have to wait until Monday. It works perfect in development, and as expected, had an enormous slew of tricky problems in production. I have zero patience right now and will put it up after the weekend.

Wiki is up and caching issue is fixed. Feel free to add to it, I'm going to be adding a huge chunk of stuff to it within a few days, but its up and running for anyone that wants to edit it.

I'm guessing you will add a way to add new pages etc?

Perhaps you should actually read the first few sentences of the wiki ;p

It's a full wiki setup with versioning, diff, histories and whatnot, I'm introducing the most simple features first and unhiding the rest as it grows.

awesome! Right after I deployed it I got hit with a huge amount of things I need to attend to, but once I finish them up I'm going to be adding a ton to it too. I don't really expect people to fill it out unless theres something substantial there (which is fine), just haven't had the time to really fill it out yet. Probably within the week.

So, my next major feature will be redoing the profile page and particularly the favorites section. This changes a lot about the core functionality of my app so this might take a bit longer than any other feature. I basically am going to add multiple categories or "buckets" that you can create to organize the resources in any way you wish. This will probably replace the reading list feature which you could just make a category for. Things like how many times a resource was favorited though I need to do some thinking about, as well as the entire UI.

Just wanted to give everyone an update as I know this is one somewhat annoying part of trying to find stuff you've saved.

I'm also open to suggestions... I was thinking that perhaps the homepage favorite star would remain the same. Then, if you view your profile it would have drag-and-drop into buckets/categories.

Then, perhaps later on I could add a feature where if you hover the star long enough it would allow you to add it to a category right from there.

Tutorials are any resources you learn from.

Examples: an intro to html5 screencast, a pdf about git, photoshop effects tutorials, meta-programming in ruby, lambda calculus, higher-order fixed-point combinators.

Tools are websites, apps or services used -on- your project (indirectly), to aid the process.

Examples: A color scheme generator, email marketing software, usability heat maps, css3 code generators, a downloadable png compressor.

Assets are downloadable files used -in- your projects, usually as code, textures, or images.

Examples: a jquery sticky menu, photoshop brushes, background textures, mvc frameworks, twitter bootstrap, 960 grid system.
