Is it required to write code that's thread safe? I know it should, but maybe there was a non-async option.

Also, how does it handle failed jobs, does it have web interface, and is/can data be persisted?

I currently use resque, but I would be open to switching, as I hear only great things.

I always wonder how to write thread safe code... I haven't seen much of a good guide on that...
